Mine Host

Personal Work

Concept Design, Illustration

Concept artwork for my Emily Carr University graduation film.
I wrote the original story, inspired by the poem Mine Host by John McCrae, in which Death plays the part of an innkeeper on the road of the living, guiding the weary-hearted traveler to a rest which brings no peace. The look for the film was heavily inspired by the work of Czech photographer Jan Saudek, whose bleak tableaus are somehow both frighteningly violent and reassuringly gentle.
The story features only two characters, a waifish young girl and a dark, looming plague doctor. The two of them inhabit the abandoned ruin of a hospital, trapped in an endless cycle of remembrance and loss.
